Abstract. A series of studies was conducted to analyse the effect of red blood cell (RBC) antigens of blood groups on the resistance of Holstein cows of different breeding to non-communicable diseases of internal organs and leukemia. The research object was the Holstein cows of local (163 heads) and Australian (178 heads) origin in Khabarovsk Krai. Animals tested by blood group were selected according to archival data for 2007–2011. The study was conducted using conventional research methods. The frequency of RBC antigens was compared between cows that retired after 5 lactation periods and those retired at earlier lactation periods due to various diseases. The Holstein cows of local and Australian origin revealed both general and individual blood group RBC antigens – markers of susceptibility (resistance) to diseases. In the Holstein group of local breeding, which is more susceptible to diseases, the B2, T2, Bʹ, I1, Gʹ, Iʹ, Qʹ, Bʹʹ, Gʹʹ, C1, C2, E, W, L and S1 antigens were significantly more frequently observed. In the Holstein group of Australian breeding, the carriers of the A2, Zʹ, B2, G2, G3, T2, Y2, Bʹ, Gʹ, Qʹ, Gʹʹ, C1, C2, E, Cʹ, Uʹ and Uʹʹ antigens were more susceptible to diseases, while the carriers of the W antigen were found to be more resistant. The B2, T2, Bʹ, Gʹ, Gʹʹ C1, C2 and E antigens are the common markers of susceptibility to diseases for Holstein cows of both local and Australian breeding: the animals carrying these antigens are significantly more likely to suffer from gynaecological, cardiovascular, respiratory system and gastrointestinal tract diseases.

Keywords: cattle; Holstein breed; disease susceptibility; RBC antigens; risk factor.
