Abstract. The problem of identifying the most actively developing scientific topics is very urgent. Tracking the changes in the scientific terminology on the example of the plant protection area revealed changes in this scientific area. It is assumed that the frequency distribution of keywords can indicate the diversity of areas, methods, and research objects. The study was conducted on the document stream of the Web of Science Core Collection database for 2019–2021. Search and selection in the database resulted in a documentary array on the plant protection topic containing 9,300 documents, with more than 24 thousand citations in total. Then, the documents were ranked from top to bottom and selected according to their citation index and rating of the publications, in which they were published. As a result, we identified approximately 350 of the most cited documents published in the most highly rated (in terms of the impact factor) journals and analyzed the frequency distribution of the author’s keywords. Under modern conditions, the most actively developing plant protection areas are methods for diagnosing diseases of crops; problems associated with the resistance of pests to control agents, and the development of control methods; the use of environmentally low-hazard plant protection products; study of the impact of plant protection products on non-target objects; application of the achievements of molecular biology and nanotechnology, as well as robotization, artificial intelligence, precision and high-tech methods in plant protection.

Keywords: plant protection; scientific research; research methods; bibliometrics; keywords; frequency distribution.
