Abstract. The research aimed to develop a new approach to the designing methodology of a forest hydro-ameliorative complex under conditions of the Central Chernozem region using geographic information systems (GIS) and substantiation of the arboreal species in the designed forest belts. The developed approach is based on the known methods of calculation and designing of forest belts placement in an agricultural landscape, but has a number of fundamental features in the calculation using GIS tools for catchment areas and catchment complexes as a whole, with a set of individual relief indicators and flow characteristics at each specific point of the surface, and not for individual working areas with averaged indicators. Another feature of the new approach is the use of GIS not only at the stage of visualization of the calculation results but also at the calculation stage itself. It allows quite accurately calculate the location of forest belts, taking into account the characteristics of the flow and relief. Due to the automation of calculations, the design time reduced 2.5–3.0 times. The composition of tree species for growing forest belts justified for landscapes and climatic conditions of the Central Chernozem region allows achieving a flow-regulating and anti-erosion function of plantations in the shortest possible time after their planting. According to the data obtained in the experiment on the contour-ameliorative agriculture in the Kursk region, the forest hydro-ameliorative complex, including a narrow forest belt with a ditch in the interrow space and a bank along the lower forest edge, already in the second year of functioning contributed to the reduction of the runoff layer more than 2 times. At the same time, there was a decrease in soil washout from 5.0 to 0.8 t/ha.

Keywords: methodology; agrolandscape; soil erosion; anti-erosion organization of the territory; forest belt; hydraulic structures.
