Summary. World demand for peat has a pronounced tendency to steady growth, so the peat is exported. Underestimating of the peat resources of Tomsk region under conditions of modern accumulation of peat and progressive swamping of the territory causes the need for an inventory of the peat pool, evaluation of the current state of peat fields and their resource potential. The author's technique was applied to assess the resource potential of areas of peat deposits in Tomsk region. The methodology of evaluation of the resource potential is based on the construction of score scale taking into account the data on the existing peat deposits, modern peat accumulation potential, as well as the conditions of development of peat deposits. The studies were carried out using methods of geo-information simulation, the data of geological reports on the detailed peat exploration in the 1970-80s, space photographs Landsat. The assessment of resource potential showed, that within the peat deposit Ust-Bakchar it can be separated areas with low (1-2 points) and medium (4-6 points) resource potential, occupying 35% and 65% of the area, respectively. The maximum resource potential (6 points) is typical for drained area with low level of swamp water (0.6-1.5 m below surface) and the thickness of peat deposits 2-3 m. Within the Temnoe peat deposit areas are selected with medium (4-6 points) and high (8 points) resource potential occupying 92% and 8% of the area, respectively. The drained plot with low level of swamp water (0.8 m below the surface), the thickness of the peat level 2.5 m and a high potential of peat accumulation (1200 g/m2) is characterized by the high resource potential. The investigations led to the conclusion that in the future it is necessary to continue the examination of the current state of peat deposits during the planning of their development.
